So far this year, the energy sector has been largely absent from S&P 500 index constituent changes, even when corporate transactions are included. The discretionary sector has recorded the most deletions from the S&P 500, including Macy's, while industrials has the most additions, including Carrier Global and Otis Worldwide. Only two companies in the energy sector were deleted from the S&P 500 so far this year because of market-cap changes: Cimarex Energy and Helmerich & Payne.
Index changes have been relatively light this year, with a total of 14 additions and deletions, perhaps in part due to the fact that the market drawdown and recovery were so rapid. In the six-quarter downdraft from late 2007 to early 2009, the index recorded 76 changes, with a peak of 17 in Q408. #stocktalk
