Last night’s presidential debate covered several American industries with both candidates making policy promises that could affect trading today. Here’s a quick round-up of things to watch for:
• Vaccine makers: Early in the debate, President Trump said a vaccine was coming “within weeks” and went on to name Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer, which are up modestly pre-market. Biotech names could trade in sympathy.
• Insurers: The debate on healthcare policy and the Affordable Care Act rages on and a disintegration of Obamacare would force more competition, which could hit some of the major players.
• Electric vehicles and batteries: Vice President Biden talked about a gradual transition to renewable energy. “Putting charging stations along every highway” was one idea he put forward.
• Oil: Biden wants to cut federal subsidies to fossil-fuel producers and transition away from the sector “over time,” he said
